YouthAbility: 10 years young
6 July 2016
Back in 2006 we set up YouthAbility, a small youth club in Cumbria for young disabled people.
10 years on, there’s a few clubs and we’re supporting youngsters across the county.
At meetings, young people learn about everything from money management to emotional resilience.
And they have fun too — for the past three years, their team has won the trophy for best parade entry at Dalton Carnival.
The YouthAbility team knows sport is a great way to bring young people together. So, in recent years, they’ve organised everything from wheelchair basketball to canoeing.
All YouthAbility groups have their own sports equipment and Bernie who goes to one of the youth clubs says:
‘I really enjoy the sporty things. We do lots of games and keep really active.’
Bernie also took part in the 21-mile sponsored walk from Coniston to Barrow in her wheelchair.
‘My favourite thing was getting to the checkpoints and tagging myself to see how well I’d done.
‘The experience was really good. It’s the furthest I’ve ever been in my chair.’
The work Youthability does is only possible thanks to generous donations. Here’s to another ten years!
