Change100 deadline approaches
8 January 2015
Disabled students and recent graduates have until 30 January to apply for this year's Change100 summer placements. Successful applicants get a three-month paid internship at a top UK employer.
The internships not only provide young people with disabilities with valuable work experience, but also open employers up to a vast talent pool they may be not taking full advantage of.
Our recent research shows that three-quarters of the British public think disabled people are unable to do many jobs. This is despite latest government figures showing 259,000 more disabled people are in work today compared to a year ago.
With nearly 11.5 million people of working age in Great Britain who are disabled or have a long term health condition, 20% of customers for the average business are likely to be disabled. Employing disabled people creates better connections with disabled customers, helping businesses tap into a spending power of £80 billion (the so-called ‘purple pound’).
Disability is no barrier to a brilliant career
The successful businesspeople who have won or been shortlisted for the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs show that disability is not a barrier to a brilliant career.
The 2007 winner, Amar Latif, qualified as a management accountant but was refused work. He was told a blind person could not be an accountant. He did not let this discrimination hold him back and became head of commercial finance for British Telecom. He now runs ‘travel company with a difference’ Traveleyes.
Last year's winner, Ben Wolfenden, has built up a successful digital marketing business despite undergoing up to five hours of physiotherapy and medication every day for cystic fibrosis and diabetes.
Pilot year graduates already benefiting
Last year's Change100 graduates are already seeing their careers benefit from taking part in the scheme. Sophie Stowell has secured a place on Barclays graduate scheme following her Change100 work placement, while Tony Richards has landed a job in the civil service.
In fact, every Change100 participant who was seeking work has secured employment.
‘My advice to anyone looking to apply is: definitely apply!’
