How do I become a volunteer?

Will it cost me anything?

Volunteers should not be out of pocket because of volunteering for us. We reimburse reasonable travel costs, and other expenses if required for the role, if agreed in advance.

I am a disabled person. Can I volunteer?

We promote inclusive volunteering opportunities throughout Leonard Cheshire and we welcome applications from disabled people. We also promote volunteering for disabled young people through our programme Can Do. Find out more about Can Do.

Can I volunteer with my company?

What if I have a criminal record?

We are committed to equality and diversity and we believe everyone has a positive contribution to make, so we welcome enquiries from all people.

However, some of our roles which involve volunteering with vulnerable children or adults are dependent on a satisfactory DBS or PVG check.

I live outside the UK but in the EU. Can I volunteer?

We host EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteers in services across the UK. We recruit volunteers in February and August to arrive in October and May.

Volunteers receive:

  • full insurance cover for the duration of the project
  • an online language assessment and course
  • board and lodging
  • pocket money for everyday needs
  • a mentor to support you to adjust to life in the UK
  • travel costs from their country of residence to the UK

  • a motivation letter explaining your interest and experience of working with disabled people
  • information about your sending organisation

Can I volunteer if I live outside the UK and the EU?

All volunteers who come from outside Europe need to go through one of the external agencies we work with.
